Expertise built up over many years

A long history in Berlin stretching back more than 100 years, and an interdisciplinary team of around 150, has helped create a solid foundation for our range of services.

1902

In 1902, the food chemist and court-certified legal expert Dr Wilhelm Lohmann (1855–1944) moved his Chemical Laboratory and Hygiene Institute, which was founded around the turn of the 20th century, from central Berlin to Friedenau. He managed the laboratory until 1931.

1931

In 1931, Dr Ludwig Hess (1882-1956), a state-certified food chemist and publicly appointed trade chemist, became a partner in the laboratory. He led the laboratory through the difficult war years and post-war period, right up to his death in 1956.

1956

In 1956, Ludwig Hess’s daughter, Dr Hildegard Hess (1920–2014) took over management of the lab and successfully built on his work. Hildegard Hess had already begun working in her father’s lab in 1944, and in 1954 was awarded “Appointment as publicly appointed professional consultant industrial chemist for the region of Berlin” certification, therefore becoming the first female industrial chemist in Berlin and indeed in Germany.

1983

The Institut Kirchhoff Berlin was founded in the Bundesallee in Berlin’s Wilmersdorf district in 1983 by Dr Erhard Kirchhoff (born 1949).

1986

In 1986, the Institute acquired the Dr Hess Laboratory in Albestrasse 4 to supplement the work of the Bundesallee site. This laboratory site was extended and developed to create a water/environmental laboratory.

1989

Since 1989, the Institute has been managed by Dr Erhard Kirchhoff and his wife Dr Jutta Kunert-Kirchhoff   (born 1957).

2001

In 2001, both laboratory premises at Albestrasse 3-4 in Berlin-Friedenau were combined following development of additional space at the premises.

2015

At the end of 2015, the Institute moved from Albestraße to Oudenarder Straße 16 in Berlin Mitte. This allowed Institut Kirchhoff GmbH to extend its  laboratory, apparatus, and office areas to around 5,500 m² over 2 floors.

2019

Since 2019, the Institute has been part of the MÉRIEUX NutriSciences corporate group. As a result, Institut Kirchhoff Berlin GmbH has been designated a MÉRIEUX NutriSciences Group centre of expertise in Germany.
