Nitrosamines in food and drug products

Institut Kirchhoff Berlin offers the analysis of nitrosamines.

Nitrosamines, particularly NDMA (N-nitrosodimethylamine), have been of concern for environmental and food analytics for a long time. NDMA has been classified by the IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) of the WHO as likely to be carcinogenic and has been found in drinking water and numerous foods, e.g. meat, dairy products and vegetables.

Recently, NDMA has been detected in an increasing number of drug products, leading in some cases to product recalls. Examples of those pharmaceuticals include hypotensive sartans, ranitidine-containing medications for heartburn and metformin-containing diabetes products. The EMA (European Medicines Agency) is calling on companies and manufacturers to conduct a risk evaluation on their products.

Institut Kirchhoff Berlin offers the analysis of raw materials and finished products by means of GC-MS/MS or LC-MS/MS. Positive results can be confirmed on demand by state-of-the-art high-resolution mass spectrometry.
